Dear Friends,

     The 2013 session of the Montana Legislature is upon us. Once again, Montana voters have chosen a divided state government, maintaining Republican majorities in both houses while electing a new Democratic governor. I hope that we can improve on relations between the executive and legislative branches, and look forward to working with the new governor on areas where we can find common ground.

    As always, several issues will come before us in the new session. Montana deserves credit for having a budget surplus. States like California and Illinois would love to be in our fiscal shoes. But it was fiscal discipline that got us here, and we would be well to maintain that practice. We must also keep in mind that the 4-500 million dollar projected surplus would not go far in paying our 4.25 billion dollar unfunded pension liability. Also, the recent fiscal cliff fiasco at the federal level does not inspire confidence as to the long term health of the federal government. Approximately $.40 of every government dollar spent in Montana is federal. We would be prudent to start planning for the day when the state will have to pick up most, if not all, of that burden.

    As always, you can count on me to be a staunch defender of private property rights, individual freedoms, and creating more opportunities for Montanans to excel in the private sector.
